Arlington man receives probation for Interstate 30 hit-and-run death

Arlington resident and former Tarrant County corrections officer Jeffrey Holland has been sentenced to 10 years probation and a $10,000 fine for the hit-and-run death of 28-year-old Ladrieka Waggoner.

According to police, on the night of October 14, 2012 Holland was driving along I-30 from a bar to a strip club when he hit Waggoner, who was walking along Beach Street in east Fort Worth. Holland knocked her into a guardrail and fled. She was found dead at the scene the next morning.

The jury found Holland guilty of causing an accident involving injury or death, which is considered a third-degree felony in Texas and is punishable by a maximum of 10 years in prison. As part of Holland’s probation, he must serve 120 days in a lockdown facility and was also ordered to erect a memorial at the accident site.

Families of victims speak out against GM

Families of people victimized by defective GM vehicles are speaking out against the manufacturer. Faulty ignition switches in GM vehicles have caused more than one dozen deaths and many more injuries. Angry family members want individuals within the company to be held legally responsible for failing to disclose the defects in a timely manner.

On Wednesday, April 3, Senator Claire McCaskill said that the lead ignition switch engineer on the Chevy Cobalt has actively attempted to hide the fact that the ignition switches are deficient.

Should it be proven that GM’s employees did intentionally choose to not disclose information regarding their vehicles’ maladies, legal experts said that it is much easier to accuse a corporation of  wrongdoing, rather than individuals.

Jury told that BP caused toxic exposure to neighbors

BP PLC exposed nearby residents of its defective Texas City refinery to at least 500,000 pounds (227,000 kilograms) of harmful gases, a lawyer told a Texas jury of eight women and four men in his closing statements on the first three of almost 48,000 toxic-exposure claims on Tuesday, October 8.

The prosecutor added that the British multinational oil and gas company would have been backed by more than $20 million had it chosen to shut down its faulty unit to conduct repairs.

After four weeks of testimony, the jurors  began deliberating last Wednesday, October 9.

The plaintiffs are seeking almost  $200,000 in actual damages each, plus $10 billion in punitive damages, which they will donate to charity.
